MoneyGram to Deliver School Supplies to Children in the Philippines
A leading global money transfer company begins back-to-school season with $100,000 donation to World Vision
Malabon City, Philippines (Oct. 13, 2012) - Students in Malabon City will have new school supplies, as part of a $100,000 donation by MoneyGram (NYSE: MGI) to World Vision to support education, with employees personally distributing education essentials at the Malabon Amphitheatre on Oct. 13. More than 3,000 young children - including students from eight different schools around the city - will be given school supplies.
The event will commence with a short introduction from MoneyGram and World Vision representatives, followed by a child's inspiring testimony about typhoon Saola's aftermath. The students also will hear encouraging words from World Vision experts about resiliency, overcoming trauma, and continuing their studies despite surrounding adversity, after which the new school supplies will be presented to the children.
The school supply delivery in the Philippines is part of MoneyGram's global effort to bring children closer to their education goals by donating school supplies for the back-to-school season in more than a dozen countries across Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe and Latin America.
"Education is the first step to a productive life, which is why many MoneyGram customers working in other countries use our service to send money home to help their families prepare for the new school year," said Juan Agualimpia, chief marketing officer of MoneyGram. "We're pleased we can bring families closer together through our services, and especially happy to support education in communities where we work and live throughout the world."
MoneyGram employees in Kenya and Romania also will distribute school supplies to students in need. In addition, children in other countries where World Vision works will benefit from this donation, including young students in Albania, Ghana, Haiti, Laos, Rwanda and Vietnam.
"These areas are in particular need of school supplies, and we are so thankful for MoneyGram's generous donation. It will give thousands of children the basics they need," said Jeff Eichenlaub, senior director of global corporate partnerships for World Vision. "We're also glad to see MoneyGram employees get involved in the distribution of supplies and witness first-hand the impact of these efforts and the difference they're making in children's lives."
MoneyGram donated to World Vision because of the organization's focus on fighting poverty by increasing educational opportunities for children in more than 100 countries around the world. Eichenlaub also noted the donation will support local economies by acquiring the school supplies in each country.
"We hope this donation will amplify the resources available to schools in important regions, while these children take a step toward a brighter future," said Agualimpia.
