MoneyGram Gives $30,000 To Communities In Schools Dallas Region

October 9, 2012 | Press Release

Philanthropic Giving Evolves Into MoneyGram Foundation

DALLAS (Oct. 9, 2012) - The Dallas area is full of hard-working students working to overcome obstacles and excel in their studies. Today, MoneyGram is placing its support behind at-risk students in the "Girls Exploring Math and Science" (GEMS) program, with a $30,000 donation to Communities In Schools Dallas Region (CISDR). The program will directly reach a total of 150 middle school female students in six schools throughout the Dallas region. MoneyGram will also donate $200,000 to educational initiatives to countries across Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, Latin America and North America.

MoneyGram has a long history of giving to worthy causes. Since 2006, MoneyGram has donated approximately $500,000 annually through our Global Giving program. Our philanthropic efforts have now evolved into establishing our MoneyGram Foundation. With its guiding principle, "Inspiring minds. Improving lives," the focus of the MoneyGram Foundation is rooted in the belief that education is at the heart of better economic opportunities, healthier families, and individual freedom and empowerment. The Foundation will fund programs that provide educational resources and basic school supplies to millions of school-age children around the world.

"The students who are most successful in school - and later in life - are the ones who are inspired by their subjects, and encouraged by their teachers, parents, and communities to remain curious about the world around them," said Pamela H. Patsley, chairman and chief executive officer of MoneyGram. "Communities In Schools Dallas Region's GEMS program is a great example of how one organization can have a tremendous impact on the future of children through education."

Students in the GEMS program are offered classroom and experiential learning opportunities to strengthen interest and skills in the important STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) academic areas, which will create more future career options and better opportunities. The MoneyGram donation will sponsor the following six Dallas-area schools: Ann Richards Middle School (Dallas ISD), Bowie Middle School (Irving ISD), Crockett Middle School (Irving ISD), Frankford Middle School (Plano ISD), Lancaster Middle School (Lancaster ISD), and Richardson West Junior High School (Richardson ISD).

"This contribution from MoneyGram will directly support improvement in math, science, and the use of technology by middle school girls in the Dallas region," noted Sandra G. Chavarria, president and chief executive officer of CISDR. "We could not be more grateful for their donation, as it will make a meaningful difference in the lives and futures of the young girls in our program."
