Will provide free ESL and general education classes to local community
DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Dallas-based MoneyGram (NASDAQ:MGI), a leading global money transfer and payment services company, is working with the City of Dallas to open a new literacy center at the Bachman Lake Public Library.
The MoneyGram Literacy Center will provide English as a second language classes, general education and financial literacy lessons to about 1,000 people each year at no cost to them. MoneyGram will fund instructors, class materials and books for the center for the next three years.
"MoneyGram believes that literacy and education are at the heart of better economic opportunities, healthier families and individual empowerment," saysJuan Agualimpia, EVP, Latin America/Caribbean & CMO at MoneyGram. "We look forward to working with the Dallas Public Library and the city to transform lives through reading and education in the Bachman Lake community."
"We are thrilled to have the support of MoneyGram to bring vital literacy programs to the Bachman Lake Library," says Jo Giudice, Director of Libraries, City of Dallas. "These funds will allow the library to enhance our services in the community and proactively address the adult and family literacy needs here."
More than 70% of people who visit the Bachman Lake Library speak a language other than English at home. This program will develop their English skills while also educating them on financial basics such as opening a bank account, building good credit, transferring money and fraud protection.
While the literacy center is primarily for adults learning English, the center will offer family literacy programs during the summer and on Saturdays.
