The MoneyGram Foundation Opens Mobile Library in Indonesia to Boost Literacy

JAKARTA (August 22, 2017) — The MoneyGram Foundation and Yayasan Pengembangan Perpustakaan Indonesia (YPPI) are excited to announce the grand opening of the first MoneyGram Smart Mobile Library in Jakarta. The library on wheels gives children access to 1,000 books, computers and Wi-Fi connections. The new educational facility was made possible through a $63,000 grant to YPPI from the MoneyGram Foundation, a non-profit agency committed to empowering children through education.

“The MoneyGram Foundation and YPPI have a common goal to increase awareness about the importance of literacy and education,” said Alex Holmes, MoneyGram’s chief executive officer. “We know that the new innovative MoneyGram Smart Mobile Library along with our ongoing partnership with YPPI will continue to boost literacy in Indonesia and improve lives for children and their families.”

The first stop for the mobile library is in Tulungagung, East Java, an area where many migrant workers originate but very few receive degrees.

“We need to prepare today’s children not only for school but for the increased competition that they will face in a fast changing world,” said Trini Haryanti, Director YPPI. “This is why Tulungagung has become our main focus for now. We want to provide the youth with the tools that will help them be more aware and forward looking, which can help transform Tulungagung into a more prosperous city in the future.”

The mobile library is just one of many educational items the MoneyGram Foundation has funded with YPPI. In 2015, the foundation issued a grant that provided more than 10,000 books to preschool classrooms which benefitted nearly 300 teachers and supported more than 2,300 children in various regions of the Jakarta Province of Indonesia.
