MoneyGram Foundation and LitCam Unite to Boost Literacy

Learning and reading corners to be established in 14 schools across Germany

Frankfurt (October 8, 2018) - The MoneyGram Foundation, in collaboration with LitCam, a nonprofit organization advocating educational equality and integration, announced the launch of a program aimed at improving children’s literacy. As part of “Books Say Welcome” project, learning and reading corners will be established in 14 selected schools across Germany to assist children from underserved immigrant and refugee communities.

“At MoneyGram, we believe that education can transform children’s lives. By providing them with the appropriate skills and tools, they can be empowered to create their own future. With this project, we want to offer equal educational opportunities to children who are starting their lives in a new country,” said Aimee Griffiths, head of the MoneyGram Foundation.

In recent years, the increased migration has created an urgent need in Germany’s educational system for initiatives towards integration of migrant students. To respond to this challenge, the MoneyGram Foundation awarded LitCam a $25,000 grant. The funds will enable LitCam to furnish school libraries with hundreds of age appropriate books in bilingual and German.

It is estimated that between 700 and 1,200 students in North Rhine Westphalia, Hamburg, Berlin, Lower Saxony, Bavaria, Saxony and Hesse will benefit from these facilities. The project will be completed by the end of the year.
