Luang Prabang, LAOS (May 8, 2018) – The representatives of the MoneyGram Foundation, the Pencils of Promise team and local community members celebrated today the opening of the Sam Nyaek II School in the Luang Prabang Province. The construction of the building was possible thanks to a grant awarded by the MoneyGram Foundation to Pencils of Promise, an international nonprofit organization that increases quality education access through programs for children in the developing world.
The MoneyGram Foundation grant allowed for the construction of a school that lifted barriers to education such as overcrowding, poor ventilation and unsanitary conditions. The construction of the Sam Nyaek II School was a joint effort, with teachers, parents, and local community members working together for a few months to construct and equip the building for the benefit of more than 640 students and 430 community members.
“A positive learning environment is essential to students’ success as it presents an opportunity to build academic and social skills. We are proud to support the work that Pencils of Promise does throughout the Luang Prabang Province for the second time. Thanks to our collaboration, the children have now access to a modern facility constructed specifically to meet the needs of the local community,” said Raj Dhorkay, MoneyGram’s regional head for Malaysia, Brunei and Indo China.
To date, the MoneyGram Foundation has awarded over $575,000 to the pursuit of education efforts in the Asia Pacific region.
